Founded by renowned young winemaker Ma Jie, Petit Mont is an ambitious attempt at capturing China’s various and unique 风土 fengtu (terroir), for which the label is named, with ultimate elegance and grace. After earning dual master degrees in oenology from Northwest A&F University as well as the Vinifera EuroMaster program as a recipient of an Erasmus Mundas scholarship, Ma Jie returned to China and is now recognized among a new generation of progressive Chinese winemakers aiming to discover and bottle China's landscape. Along with with partner and winemaker Yu Qian, Ma Jie founded Petit Mont in 2017 as a pan-China project, expanding across five major wine-producing regions of China (Ningxia's Helan Mountain; high altitude Yunnan, Tibet, and Sichuan; and the Xinjiang Yili Valley) with a strict localist philosophy of fermenting and bottling grapes where they are grown. Petit Mont’s Chinese name, 寸山 (Cùn Shān), elegantly embodies this ethos: the character for "mountain" (山) represents the land and terroir, while "inch" (寸) speaks to the Chinese sense of proportion and humility before nature.
